Disable reports generated from applications that crash.
1. Click Start.
2. Right click My Computer.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Click Error Reporting.
6. Click Disable error repoting. Keep But notify me when critical errors occur checked.
7. Click Ok.
8. Click Ok.

Reconfigure your comunication ports for higher speeds.
1. Click Start.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Double Click System.
4. Click Hardware tab.
5. Click Device Manager.
6. Double Click Ports.
7. Double Click the appropriate Com port.
8. Click Port Settings.
9. Click Bits per second and change it to the highest supported speed.
10. Click Flow Control and change it to Hardware.
11. Click Ok.

To simplify the configuration of sharing files and to reduce the possibility of misconfiguration, Windows XP uses Simple Sharing by default. When enabled the simple sharing interface appears in place of the traditional sharing and security tabs. By using the simple sharing interface, you can create or remove a share and set permissions on the share. When simple sharing is in effect, appropriate permissions are automatically set on shared files and folders.
1. Click Start.
2. Click My Computer.
3. Click Tools.
4. Click Folder Options.
5. Click the View tab.
6. Uncheck the use simple file sharing option.
7. Click Ok.

Remove all non-needed drivers from config.sys. Ideally, config.sys will be empty and can be safely deleted. This assumes that you run all your applications and games from Windows 9x. If you boot to MS-DOS mode this file is necessary and you should skip this tip.

Note: All of the functionality of the drivers contained in config.sys are built into Windows 9x and should be auto detected. Some older system such as 486’s or non-PnP systems (legacy systems) might not auto-detect some devices automatically.

Note: Changes to config.sys are directly related to Autoexec.bat and you should implement both tips first before trying to resolve problems with devices. Remove all DOS drivers and install the Windows 9x replacements.

1. Copy config.sys to config.o9x. Print config.sys for later reference if possible.
2. Restart your PC.
3. Make sure all devices work. Check your CD-ROM, sound, modem and other devices.
4. If one of these devices is not working or not detected in Windows 9x.
5. Click Start. Click Settings. Click Control Panel.
6. Click Add New Hardware. Click Next. Click Next.
7. This automatic detection procedure will take some time(up to 15 minutes).
8. This will install support for devices that were previously controlled by DOS drivers.
9. Restart your PC.
10. In some cases, Windows 9x will not be able to find all the devices and install the proper drivers on legacy systems. In addition, some devices might require additional drivers.
11. If this is the case these additional steps can be tried. Try additional solutions in the order listed.
a) Download Windows 9x drivers for the device and manually install it yourself.
b) Replace Legacy devices with new PnP devices.
c) Flash the mainboard BIOS. Upgrading the BIOS sometimes improves detection of devices and provides PnP support. After the BIOS is flashed go back to step #5.
d) Re-install the DOS drivers for the specific non-working device.
i) See the reference table below for specific hints on what driver matches the missing device.
ii) Copy the line that will activate the non-working device.
iii) For example, your NEC IDE CD-ROM isn’t detected. You’ve tried every other solution.
iv) Add the line DEVICE=NEC_IDE.SYS to config.sys or look at your config.sys printout from step
#3. Also add the mscdex.exe command back into your autoexec.bat(see Tuning Autoexec.bat for
more details).
v) This should only be done as a last resort.

Set the maximum speed of your modem port to an optimal value.
1. Right click My Computer
2. Click Properties
3. Click Device Manager
4. Click Ports
5. Double Click the appropraite Com port.
6. Click Port Settings
7. Click Bits per second and change it to 115200
8. Click Flow Control and change it to Hardware
9. Click Advanced
10. Make sure Use FIFO buffers should be checked.
11. Click and drag the Receive and Transmit Buffers. Set the slider all the way to high.
12. Click Ok.

Download, install and configure the newest printer driver.
1. Click Start.
2. Click Settings. Click Printers.
3. Right Click the specific printer.
4. Click Properties. Click Details.
5. Click New Driver. Click Yes.
6. Click Have Disk.
7. Type in the directory where you downloaded the printer drivers. Click Ok.
8. Select the appropriate printer model. Click Ok.
