  • Internet marketing doesn’t require a PhD nor is there even one to get. The only way to learn is on the job. You basically leapfrog your way down an information trail, learning as you go. One tip leads to another and so it goes on. Some people entering the field aren’t exactly sure what Internet marketing actually is so we need to make that clear first and foremost.

We must first determine what Internet marketing isn’t. It’s not a job for con artists and you definitely should not participate in spamming. You aren’t just going to sell things on eBay and you won’t need your own website that sells products you have to keep in stock.

In reality, Internet marketers can pick and choose from a whole host of options available to help them make money. Opportunities are numerous and could include one or more of the following:•

Offering other people’s products for a commission (affiliate marketing)
Selling on eBay or other auction sites
    • Selling
    internet services (writing, graphics, etc.)
Possessing a website that sells dropshipped or wholesale items
Marketing digital downloads (information products like eBooks)
    Running an accountsite

This is a very small list but it should be enough to peak your interest. Most newcomers to Internet marketing have the fear that they have nothing to sell. Many people make a good income without ever stocking any product of their own and it can be the same for you.

Internet marketing creates no gender or age boundaries for you. There are teenagers who have launched multi-million dollar companies as budding Internet marketers whose ideas sprung to life and catapulted them to instant success.

Being shady or unethical in Internet marketing may make you short term dollars but for a business that will support you for many years you need to build a good reputation and use solid business practices.

  • Where does Search Engine Optimization fall, is it marketing or technology?

Technology you need to understand how to enter code and create your website.  For on page optimization you need to have a strong understanding of technology.  understanding of proper tagging and even hot htaccess works helps with creating a well working optimized website.  Structure of your site as well as the navigation breadcrumbs and overall site design is essential for good search engine ranking.

Marketing is important as well, having an understanding of creating call to actions, leading people into the site and converting into a sale.  Its  complete process once someone first accesses your site and understanding marketing techniques is important in the site design as well.  Keep visitors once they arrive is the job of marketing.  Turn them into clients.

Both are required skills to be successful online, both onsite and offsite skills.  A true SEO should have a good balance of both.  Most SEO guru’s I know have come from a development background and have transcended into this mixed type of role.  You need to be creative and technical.  Think outside the box and get results.
