Flash was a marvelous must have component in the arsenal of web development.   Its first added that flare, video ability and action.  Flash made it simple to post video content, optimize bandwidth for animations and more.  So what happened in the past few years to make this ever so wonderful tool come to an end.

  • Both are terms of how you design your web application, web site or overall application.  They are both based on user interaction with your site.

UX is the user experience as an overall measurement.  The better of an experience the user has the more your site is UX friendly.  You can have a great site but is the user doesn’t feel the overall site experience is great then your UX is lacking.

Websites have been designed with useability, how your site links to all the posts and that was the design strategy.  Changing of the strategy to more than just functionality to include user experience is important.  Web applications have always strives to deliver an intuitive experience which makes sense.  The easy it is to navigate something even if its the users first time the more better the user experience.

Look to design with good user experience as well as functionality.

  • Several financial analysts had predicted 2011 as a year of recovery and possibly some growth in the economy. However, with widespread government spending cutbacks expected, 2011 may be somewhat early.

Web site design is quite a fast moving industry. Web design businesses are continuously trying to further improve their skills and their knowledge in an effort to get ahead of the competitors. This calls for a web site design firm to pay close attention to what the likes of Google are doing.

The pace of everyday life today is incredible. Google has obviously picked up on this because loading speed is now part of the Google algorithm. Some web sites contain huge quantities of information while others not a great deal, and both present challenges. For new internet sites your web design company should know about the most up-to-date Google algorithm and guarantee the website is designed and developed with it in mind.

Images are everywhere you look on web sites and they are prime examples of loading items which could impede your site. It really is essential that the image file size is kept to a bare minimum and that they are preferably formatted in JPEG and GIF.

Another obstacle for web-site designers and programmers is to make certain the web site being built works for the different screen resolutions available today. The can vary from 640 x 480 to 1024 x 768 and as technological innovation improves resolutions are simply going to get bigger and much better.

Additionally there is increasing interest in websites to utilize mobile devices such as the Apple iPad or Samsung’s Galaxy Tablet. Web designers are quite accustomed to having to conduct cross web browser tests. Cross platform testing is undoubtedly a growing element of website design and represents significant possibilities for many businesses.

The style of websites has changed so much in recent times. At first the net was all about bright flamboyant striking shades and fonts to grab the eye. Now, the top websites are the ones which use fairly neutral colours and fonts which you’ll find easy on the eye and simple to use. Take Google, the world’s most successful site, notice anything?

  • First steps are the proper initial setup of the strategy, determining what the goals are and how they will be measured.  Conversion goals are key in understanding what the path should be to achieve them.

The next step is then determining what assets can be used and the constraints on the deliverables.

In general look at key factors that may be influencing the conversion and see what is truly guiding the visitor through the website.  Focus more specifically at bounce rate, the traffic time on site and where they exit.  For more complex funnels and take into account the various steps and problems with those steps in achieving the end goal.

Once data is gathered, and areas of improvement are identified,  setup split testing in order provide real data on what is observed.

Example : Real world website example when looking at the data, the data showed good traffic to the services page but then a disproportionate drop-off rate after they visited the services page.  After looking over the page an immediate observation was the page length was long and the services were listed but each service had a long description giving the impressions that it may be the only one available.  The theory is that people may come to the services page only see the top service and then hit back or leave since they don’t see the lower services.  The suggestion is to update the top area of the page listing all the services and allowing the user to click using anchor or separate pages to the service they are looking for.  Revisit this the following month to see if there is a better visitor flow though ot the conversion area after the services.

  • Organic listing online are vital to any website.  You need to have good search engine optimization to rank high in search engines.

Just to illustrate the importance of being in the top 3 results on Google.  The top 3 results get 63% of the clicks on Google.  That means a lot of free traffic to your site if you can get in the top listings.

Spots 4 and 5 make up 11% of the clicks which is still good.  Interestingly its the same amount of clicks that all listings after 10 get combined.  In fact if you have a top 1st result for a keyword you can expect 4 times the traffic that all the other sites under spot 10 get combined from that keywords.  This could be millions of other sites that rank for the keyword, ALL the Millions of Site combined are getting only a quarter of the traffic that spot 1 gets.

Yes spot 1 is really really important to get traffic.  Rounding up the top ten spots the remaining 6-10 get about 16% traffic together which is just above spot 2 on its own and still a third of the traffic from just spot one alone.

Heres the breakdown on google traffic according to rank in the search engine results.

    1 – 42%

    2 – 12%

    3 – 9%

    4 – 6%

    5 – 5%

    6 – 4%

    7 – 3.5%

    8 -3%

    9 – 2.5%

    10 – 3%

Everyone else below is getting as a combined number only about 10% of the traffic.

There are ways to improve your results, if you rank in the top 5 you can improve by having a good title tag and an enticing meta description on your page.  This gets listed in the search results page and may swing more clicks to your site if you make it appealing enough for searchers.  But remember to deliver what you descibe or your bounce rates will be high.

  • Where does Search Engine Optimization fall, is it marketing or technology?

Technology you need to understand how to enter code and create your website.  For on page optimization you need to have a strong understanding of technology.  understanding of proper tagging and even hot htaccess works helps with creating a well working optimized website.  Structure of your site as well as the navigation breadcrumbs and overall site design is essential for good search engine ranking.

Marketing is important as well, having an understanding of creating call to actions, leading people into the site and converting into a sale.  Its  complete process once someone first accesses your site and understanding marketing techniques is important in the site design as well.  Keep visitors once they arrive is the job of marketing.  Turn them into clients.

Both are required skills to be successful online, both onsite and offsite skills.  A true SEO should have a good balance of both.  Most SEO guru’s I know have come from a development background and have transcended into this mixed type of role.  You need to be creative and technical.  Think outside the box and get results.

  • Backlinking is important to any SEO strategy and directories are usually seen as a first step.  The idea is to list your site in directories which create links back your site building your own sites link strength.  The more sites that link to you means better Search Engine rankings, or does it?  Not all directories are created or seen as equal.  I’ve listed out the top 10 things to look for when you submit to a directory site.

    1. Look through the site if you find there are broken links this is a sign that the directory isn’t kept up and usually a site to avoid this type of directory
    2. Check to see how the directory itself ranks in the search engines.  No PageRank and not being listed in the SERPs is another type of directory to avoid.
    3. No quality links in the directory, if it is full of bad spammy links and sites this is a good indication you should avoid this directory.  Search engines look for sites that are trustworthy and will keep coming back for more traffic.  If the content of the site or directory is deemed to be of bad quality it will have the effect of the search engines not indexing the page.  Search engines have more of a chance of seeing the whole site and page of the directory as more trustworthy if the content is good.
    4. Too many ads on the site will also discourage SERPs from seeing a quality directory.  The ad ratio must be reasonable.
    5. Pay a nominal amount to get listed, be careful with these type of sites that only list when you pay them.  From the bigger picture point of view important sites won’t be paying to list on it meaning that the directory will be full of lower quality links and sites.
    6. Clone sites, ad no real value to the internet.  If it’s the same as another the quality of these copy sites bring no real value to the internet and search engines will not see them as trustworthy.
    7. Look at the site headers and footers, are there site wide links going out.  This is generally a bad site to avoid.
    8. List yourself where you are relevant.  Look for categories within the directory where you fit.  Only list in a relevant category.  Look at the sites that are already listed, are they relevant to the category?
    9. Auto generated content and categories are not a good sign of a quality directory.  If you find the description is cut off half way through a word, there are empty categories this is something you want to avoid.  It means that the site hasn’t be properly edited and usually a good sign of auto generated content.
    10. If it doesn’t feel right you should avoid it.   Having a bunch of bad links doesn’t do any good for your site ranking or traffic.  Its sometimes better to avoid making the mistake of listing in a spam directory as you run the risk of being categorized with the site and its contents.

The overall goal of backlinking is to build good quality links that over time will help build your website value online.  Trustworthy sites are crawled more frequently and will result in better value for your time and link.  Backlinking is not easy but once you build a list of good quality sites to submit to you will be much better off in the long run.
