0S/390 MVS/ESA Fundamentals of VSAM Part I

This course covers the concepts needed to design, or code, applications that use the Virtual Access Storage Method (VSAM). It begins with an overview of VSAM, describes what VSAM does for application programs that request its services, the four types of VSAM datasets, followed by a detailed explanation of the VSAM entry-sequenced dataset. The course examines the physical organization of a VSAM ESDS, including a close look at a control interval. The structure and components of a KSDS is discussed, which leads to the introduction of the third type of VSAM dataset -RRDS. How an RRDS can be accessed and how VSAM allows random access to records in an RRDS is also covered. The course describes the appropriate applications for relative record datasets. This course is not written to a specific version.

Fundamentals of VSAM Part I training covers such topics as:

VSAM Concepts and Terms
Entry-Sequenced Datasets
Key-Sequenced Datasets
Relative Record Dataset

This course is designed for students who want to learn more about MVS/ESA.

0S/390 MVS/ESA Fundamentals of VSAM Part II

This course explains how VSAM adds and deletes records to and from a KSDS. It describes how VSAM manages the space within the data components of the KSDS when it performs additions or deletions. It also covers the organization and function of an alternate index. It describes the role that catalogs play in maintaining and accessing VSAM datasets. It reviews the basic concepts of a catalog and shows how catalogs are used to locate and access a VSAM dataset. The course discusses master catalogs and user catalogs - their uses, similarities and differences. It also explains how to use IDCAMS to create a KSDS file statement that defines a VSAM file and how to process a KSDS file.

Fundamentals of VSAM Part II training covers such topics as:

Managing KSDS Storage
Free Space in KSDS
Control Interval and Control Area Splits
Free Space Efficiency Considerations
Dataset Reorganization
Free Space Assignment Guidelines
Alternate Indexes
An Alternate Index
Accessing a Base Cluster
Alternate Index Applications
The Role of Catalogs with VSAM Datasets
The Catalog Environment
System Datasets Used to Support Cataloging
Identifying the Catalog to a Dataset
Practical VSAM Applications
VSAM Applications

Learn exactly what you need to know about Free Space in KSDS, and the physical organization of an alternate index. You will be able to describe the functions of catalogs, identify the system datasets used to support cataloging and describe the information stored in each.
