UNIX Shell Programming

The UNIX Shell Programming course explains why and how to write shell scripts. This course teaches I/O redirection, filename shorthand, looping constructs, variables, and signal handling. The course explains how to create and run shell programs and introduces shell metacharacters and quoting mechanisms. The course covers various methods of getting input for shell scripts including command substitution, command line input, and the read and trap commands. Learn about the types of interpretations the shell performs and about double quote marks. The course discusses two conditional operators, && and | | and the shift command. Become familiar with the looping constructs provided by the shell: for loops, until loops, and while loops. The course also introduces the preset shell variable $@ and a method of using the set command to change the value of a positional parameter.

Shell Programming training covers such topics as:

Creating a Simple Shell Script
Filename Generation & Quoting
Using Shell Variables in Scripts
Input for Shell Scripts
Using Conditional Constructs
Using Looping Constructs

Description
The UNIX Shell Programming course is designed to give students an idea of what can be
accomplished with shell scripts and how to write them. This course teaches the features of the shell
such as I/O redirection, filename shorthand, looping constructs, variables, and signal handling. The
course introduces the concept of shell programming, how and when to create shell programs, and
how to run shell programs. It also provides a general discussion of shell meta-characters as well as
quoting mechanisms. The course covers various methods of getting input for shell scripts. Four
methods are presented: command substitution the read command, command line input and the
trap command. Also presented is a summary of the types of interpretations the shell performs and a
discussion about double quote marks. The flow control constructs discussed in this course include
the case command, which is much like the C programming language's switch statement and
Pascal's case statement, and the ""if"" constructs. This course discusses two conditional operators,
&& and | |, that provide a concise notation for specifying the conditions under which a command
is executed. The shift command is discussed as well. The course introduces the looping constructs
provided by the shell: for loops, until loops, and while loops. This course also introduces the preset
shell variable $@ and a methods of using the set command to change the value of a positional
parameter. This course is not written to a specific version.
