Spam is electronic junk mail, unwanted e-mail advertising for some product sent to a mailing list or newsgroup. Spam is a problem because it wastes peoples time and eats up a lot of network bandwidth. In many cases spam is the majority of emails that arrive in your inbox. The battle to stop spam is being waged by are many organizations, as well as individuals, who have taken it upon themselves to fight spam using a variety of techniques. Due to the nature of the internet and how it functions there is very little that can be done to eliminate it. But because the Internet is public, there is really little that can be done to prevent spam, just as it is impossible to prevent junk mail. However, some online services have instituted policies to prevent spammers from spamming their subscribers. 1. Don't give out you email address to untrusted sources. Unfortunetly spammers have software which gathers email addresses from the internet itself. Even offline stores and services to whom you give your email address to can add it to a list, then sell that list to a spammer. 2. Set up more than one email address. Taking advantage of the 1000s of free email providers available on the internet to set up default accounts is a great way to protect your main email. Only provide your main email address to sources and individuals who you know. Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL and many others provide you free email accounts. Keep in mind that spammers can still get your email address when someone sends an ecard to your address. 3. Report spammers to their ISP. This unfortunetly doesn't always stop spam because many spammers use offshore ISP to do their spamming. Even hitting the remove in the spam email usually just lets the spammer know that your email address is actually active. 4. Spam filtering software:Install software which filters out unwanted emails. For the individual user there is software which filters out spam by creating keeping track of unwanted emails. The software works with you email program and allows you to select the block options of emails. Also allowing you to report spammers. 5. Spam blocking solution. Another form of spam blocking is Spam Arrest. You enter you email settings into their website. All emails which are sent to your address and have not been approved will be asked to confirm a secure word. Welcome to Spam Arrest, your starting point for stopping spam. Unlike other anti-spam solutions, Spam Arrest quickly and easily blocks spam before it ever gets to your inbox — no matter how the spam is disguised or where it comes from.
