Description
This course covers the origin and history of the HP-UX operating system and its relationship with other
UNIX family systems. It examines the HP-UX system components and addresses issues surrounding its
use, administration, and development. The course highlights those aspects that make HP-UX an
innovative operating system and provides some commonly used UNIX skills and tricks.
The first unit discusses the HP-UX operating system in a historic context and it examines the operating
system architecture. It also discusses the relationship between HP-UX and other UNIX Systems.
Installing the OS discusses the HP-UX installation procedure. This unit also explains how to administer
installed software packages and how to set or modify system parameters after installation.
Managing System Configuration examines the System Administration Manager (SAM). It explains
how to use SAM and how to control access to SAM. It also describes how to adjust your HP-UX
system configuration and how to limit access to the system.
HP-UX System Administration Tasks examines some important system administration tasks. It shows
you how to properly boot and shut down the system, and how to manage disk quotas and swap
space. This unit also demonstrates how to backup and restore files and file systems and how to
manage hardware.
The Logical Volume Manager is a disk management subsystem that allows you to manage physical
disks as logical volumes. This unit explains how to manage disk logical volumes, mirrored logical
volumes, and disk striping logical volumes.
System Security Management explains how to plan and set up a secure system and how to
manage passwords and control system access. It discusses file and directory access permissions
and the configuration of secure NFS clusters.
The last unit, Graphical User Interface, provides an overview of the development of X Windows
and describes the graphical user interfaces available with HP-UX. It describes the HP Visual User
Environment and explains how to navigate within this environment.
Audience
This course addresses the needs of system administrators, software developers, IT managers, IT
consultants, and other professionals who work with computer operating systems, specifically, the
HP-UX operating system.
Prerequisites
The student should have a basic understanding of UNIX operating systems, file management, and
system administration or Course Technology CBT courses Introduction to UNIX, UNIX: Files and
